ARTWORK STATEMENT: Often I find myself stuck as an artist, especially as a photographer. Portraiture is often my subject, so my work is mainly dictated by others. Clients often asking me to imitate other’s to get their desired result. When it comes to my non contracted work, I find it hard to stray from that formula, finding inspiration to reiterate in a way of my own. My pieces become a homage to the artists they draw from. A portrait of another artist’s voice in mine. “Emulation” is inspired by and dedicated to the photographer Lindsay Schmidt, her “Orange Tree in Spain” specifically. This piece, however, is neither of an orange tree or taken in Spain, but rather taken from the back of the Colonial Park Cemetery of the boarded up SCAD building. Sometimes I fear my artistic voice is but an echo. But it’s pieces like these that remind me how important it is to let yourself be influenced by others. To surround yourself with art. You don’t have to be the first to make it, you just have to make it your own.
